Worldwide, more than 39 million people are blind, with 90 percent living in developing countries. What’s poignant is that 75% of them are unnecessarily blind.
Fear, superstition and a lack of information are important barriers when seeking medical help. The costs of surgery, medicines and transport to the hospital are other significant barriers.
LIGHT FOR THE WORLD is a Belgian NGO operating in four African countries (DR Congo, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burkina Faso). It focuses on preventing and curing blindness, as well as on education and training for blind children and adults. The NGO has existed since 1997.
