Rwanda 2014

On April 14, 2014 I took part in a contemplation week organised by the "Zen Peacemakers". We meditated both in silence and while chanting the names of the deceased at the Murambi Genocide Memorial Centre. (Rwanda)

Connected - Ntarana, Rwanda - 14 april 2014.

We leave Kigali in a minivan. I find it hard to see people walking on these roads with their belongings, friends, children, ordinary lives. It’s my second day in Rwanda. In the little church of Ntarana dozens of villagers were massacred with bullets, grenades and machetes in 1994. From the outside, the church does not hint at what took place inside.

Trust- Murambi, Rwanda 16 April 2014.

In 1994 a technical school was built on this site, as large as three soccer fields. Tutsis from the area who had sought refuge in churches were asked to gather there. After a gruelling 2 weeks, all of the 50,000 men, women, children and babies were killed. Only 10 survived. One of them is Juliette and her daughter, who was born there. She testifies how she lost her husband and two boys in the massacre.

[...]To me, such questions are posed by someone who walks into the sea and continues looking for a solid footing "toe by toe". To me, it’s about losing everything. How could I list or prioritise these things? How can I put them in words?

Dear Veteran,

In 2014 we commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the events in Rwanda. For the Veterans’ Institute, this anniversary is an opportunity to collect the testimonies given at the time, in light of the Remembrance. After all, the events in Rwanda are a part of our history.I know this invitation is meant well. Because we can keep what we collect. Like model trains or china, so why not "memories".

Strength

You knew what you were getting into! You chose to fulfil your military service with the Para Commando regiment. We couldn’t get a word in edgeways when someone told you about the possible risks."I struggle with the thought. To me, it’s like saying: "You shouldn’t have driven so fast
in that street, ..."
